Product Description
Active Ingredient: Abiraterone acetate (500 mg)
Manufacturer: Intas Pharmaceuticals
Therapeutic Class: Androgen biosynthesis inhibitor (specifically, it blocks the CYP17 enzyme)
How It Works
Prostate cancer cells often rely on androgens like testosterone to grow and multiply. Abiratas works by inhibiting a specific enzyme (CYP17) found in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissue, which is necessary for androgen production. By decreasing testosterone levels, the medication "starves" the cancer cells of the hormones they need to grow, thus slowing the progression of the cancer.
Usage and Dosage
Primary Use: Treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and high-risk metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer.
Combination Therapy: It is almost always used in combination with a steroid medication like prednisone or prednisolone to reduce the risk of side effects such as high blood pressure and low potassium levels.
Administration: The tablet must be swallowed whole with water on an empty stomach (no food for at least one hour after and two hours before the dose). Food can increase the absorption of the medicine, which may lead to serious side effects.
Prescription Only: This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription and ongoing medical supervision is required, including regular monitoring of blood pressure, liver function, and potassium levels.
