Mechanism of Action: Pegfilgrastim works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells, specifically neutrophils, which are crucial for fighting infections.
Primary Use: To decrease the incidence and duration of neutropenia (abnormally low white blood cell count) and the associated risk of fever and infection in patients receiving myelosuppressive anti-cancer drugs.
Administration: It is typically given as a single subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once per chemotherapy cycle, usually at least 24 hours after the completion of chemotherapy. It should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional.
Form: The medication often comes as a pre-filled syringe (PFS) or a penfill injection device.
Storage: It needs to be stored in a refrigerator (2C to 8C) and protected from light; it should not be frozen. For a more comfortable injection, the syringe can be left at room temperature for 30 minutes before use.
