Fosaprepitant is used with other medications to help prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment . Fosaprepitant works by blocking one of the body's natural substances that causes vomiting.
- Active Ingredient: Depending on the form, the active ingredient is either Aprepitant (in capsules) or Fosaprepitant dimeglumine (in intravenous injections), which converts to aprepitant in the body.
- Mechanism of Action: It is a neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the NK1 receptors in the brain's vomiting center, thereby preventing both acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy.
- Usage: It is a prescription-only medication used for supportive care in cancer treatment. It is not for treating existing nausea and vomiting but for preventing it. It is typically used in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older, though specific pediatric use depends on the formulation and weight.
