Pegaspargase works by breaking down L-asparagine in the plasma, effectively starving the cancer cells and inhibiting their growth and multiplication.
The "peg" in pegaspargase refers to polyethylene glycol, which is attached to the L-asparaginase enzyme. This modification allows the medication to stay in the body for a longer period, reduces the frequency of dosing, and lowers the risk of severe allergic reactions compared to the non-pegylated form of the enzyme.
