• Mechanism of Action: The injection works by stimulating the bone marrow (soft tissue inside the bones) to produce more red blood cells, which increases the body's oxygen-carrying capacity and helps to treat anemia.
• Uses: It is primarily used to manage anemia in various conditions, including:
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in patients on dialysis.
  • Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Patients receiving treatment for HIV infection with zidovudine.
  • To reduce the need for blood transfusions during certain major elective surgeries.
• Administration: The injection is administered either subcutaneously (under the skin) or intravenously (into a vein) by a healthcare professional. In some cases, patients may be trained for self-administration at home, following strict medical guidance.
• Storage: The medication must be stored in a refrigerator at 2C to 8C (36F to 46F), but it should not be frozen. It should be allowed to reach room temperature before use.

• Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, muscle/joint pain, dizziness, and increased blood pressure are common side effects.
• Serious Side Effects: This medicine can cause serious side effects, including severe high blood pressure, seizures (fits), and blood clots that require urgent medical attention.
• Precautions: Before using, a doctor should be informed about the patient's full medical history, especially if they have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, a history of blood clots, or liver disease. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and blood tests (hemoglobin, iron levels) is necessary during treatment.
